T-Shirt Sales

Posted Thursday, June 18, 2009

I wanted to thank you all.  Thanks especially to everyone who bought a shirt, thanks to everyone that gave me feedback, and thanks for everyone that put up with all the t-shirt plugging.

If you did buy a shirt and there are any problems with it, let me know and I’ll do what I can to make it right as soon as I can.

I felt comfortable taking down the big banner ad on top of the site sine I now have enough money to pay for hosting for the next year.  I’m talking to Gabe about what else we can fill all that nice new open space with.

  • Hey, hey, Sanjay!
Firstly, I, for one, never minded your adds. Sometimes I find a new site. Plus, I wouldn’t mind at all if you turned a profit. I think you should cause you do an awesome job. As for shirts though, I want something that let’s people know it’s a webcomic shirt… Maybe a fave comic (or joke re-done for a shirt format) and a logo so I can redirect people here.

  • Yo Sanjay,
I agree with RPrajzner, and also think that the ads were a nice touch, and you deserve to make money off of your artwork. I also see no reason for you to be resentful of trying to sell tshirts, as they were quite awesome, and the money went to an awesome cause. If for no other reason than you are going to have to pay for your education somehow, there is no reason for you to not to display an unintrusive ad to make a little bit of jingle, unless you got a full ride, in which case, congradulations.

  • I think maybe I minded the banner ad more than anyone.  I really like Gabe’s design and I felt like too often the ad didn’t go very well with the sort of soft pastel thing he has going on here.  And the ad box was displayed so prominently I felt like I had to be really vigilant to make sure it was an okay ad to display, and that was kind of boring to do.

I really like working with Project Wonderful.  I hope to always have their ads incorporated somewhere.

For the second shirt, there was some clamor to make a shirt out of http://cowbirdsinlove.com/185, so that’s next.  I think maybe that’s kind of a niche comic that maybe everyone won’t want to wear across their chest, but hopefully I can drum up enough interest to justify an order.  After that, for the third shirt, I was planning on something that says Cowbirds in Love on it and is unambiguously a shirt from this comic.

As for paying for my education, I don’t really expect Cowbirds in Love to do that.  My main priority is to pay for hosting so that running the site isn’t an expense, and maybe get some extra spending money.

  • I’m with those guys on the ads—if you manage to make some money off doing something you love, good on you! Pay for a bit of college, eh?

Gabe mentioned that the top left section seems a bit bare without the ads, too… he was pretty good about working the spot in so it fit. I told him to move the title down a bit to fill it in, but that seems not to have happened yet.

  • I think if your not going to have the ad up there then you should expand on just the opposite of what the ad was taking away from, the name of the comic!  Just make the logo sit up there a little more prominent and fill up that space.

As for the shirts, Bailey and I will get some sweet pics up soon of our bad selves posing in that sweet apparel.  I’m glad the endeavor went well and hope the next one does the same.

  • I am in favor of the more general “Cowbirds in Love” shirt design. Any of the philosophy/mathematics jokes from the comic are worthy shirt design ideas in my mind, but I’m a bit biased on the matter.

  • I like my shirt!  Can I recommend that the next one have a Cowbirds in Love logo on it somewhere, though?  Even if it is just small somewhere.  Keep up the good work!

  • I totally requested 185 as a shirt, but also, would totally sport a Cowbirds in Love logo with that shirt…and I would wear it everywhere all the time (well, not all the time….but often).  I would also wear a general Cowbirds in Love shirt often.

  • I concur with Austin. Math/philosophy-based comics would make the best t-shirts. And I would not only not mind a Cowbirds in Love logo being on the shirt, I’d want one on there.

  • I don’t know how well 185 would work with the name of the comic on it, but the third shirt definitely will have it.

As for math/philosophy jokes, I’ll try and think of good ones to put on a shirt.  I’ve always been fond of comic 43, the base 10 comic, and that could probably be shirtified pretty easily.

If there are particular math/philosophy jokes you think are especially good for shirts, let me know.
